Then while working with a partner, some students created posters from the perspective of Civil War soldiers from the North telling about life in the North and the reasons for the war. Other students created a poster from the perspective of a Civil War soldier from the South telling about life in the South and the reasons for the war.

Our TAP Leadership Team met to discuss our results on the field testing pre-test this morning. We will begin field testing instruction in the next couple days and begin planning for our next round of professional development (clusters) starting at the end of September. Our team looks forward to bringing some strong research based strategies, structures, and procedures to Wilburn and continue the discussion around writing for the entire school year. Keep coming back for updates! Pictured below is Ms. Goode and Ms. Lundsgaard giving the 3rd grade pre-test. Ms. Simpson and Ms. Foy are working on giving the pre-test in Ms. Foy's room. The pre-test is a writing prompt. The prompt is the same from K-5, with different demands and requirements depending on the grade level. The prompt is: "In your opinion, which kind of pet is best, a cat or a dog? Why?" Today they are digging through the pre-tests to see what her students are doing in the area of writing w/reading. Keep coming back to see how our field testing is going at WIlburn! What is field testing and why do we do it? At Wilburn, we target skills that need to be worked on school-wide and then we field test in multiple classrooms to see what will work best for students at Wilburn. Field testing is the process of targeting an area of need and then finding a strategy or procedure that will help students in this area of need. We start the process by field testing a pre-test that will be given school wide in order to target the area of need even more. We look at this process like the doctor diagnosing a patient. A pre-test gives us the diagnosis and then allows us to move forward with the right "treatment." Currently we are pre-testing in Ms. West's kindergarten classroom, Ms. Foy's 2nd grade classroom, and Ms. Lundsgaard's 3rd grade classroom.
Ms. Curry is giving a writing prompt that also involves her reading aloud important information to students. They will have to write about the prompt using what they heard her read aloud. This pre-test will let us know where to go with our kindergarten students in the area of writing and reading. Keep coming back for updates on the process! You can find our first few TAP Leadership meeting agendas attached to this post. See what we are planning for our upcoming cycles and our school goal.
Our TAP Team is looking forward to starting another strong year at Wilburn! We just had a new teacher breakfast this morning. Next week, we are getting our goals set for the 2014-2015 school year. Look for more to come as we kick off our first Clusters the week of July 28!
This is where all the great thinking happens at Wilburn Elementary.... :) We hold our weekly Cluster meetings in this location. Master Teachers and Mentor Teachers lead a professional development meeting and teachers take the learning and apply it in their classroom. You wouldn't believe all the powerful conversations that happen during this time for the benefit of our learners. Best practices at their finest! |
